To many people, sapphires mean blue gemstones. The word sapphire actually come from the Latin word "Sapphirus" meaning blue. However, this gemstone comes in a rainbow of colors ranging from yellow to black, with shades like pink, purple, and green in between. Sapphires are often referred to with the color preceding the name, blue sapphire, pink sapphire. Always a popular gemstone, sapphires have recently gained even more prominence, boosted in part when Prince Charles chose a 6-carat sapphire for Diane's engagement ring.
